Fibromyalgia Support Net is a web portal site that sets out to make finding information about Fibromyalgia quick and easy.

What is Laser Therapy?

Low level laser therapy aims to biostimulate. Because of the low power nature of low level lasers, the effects are biochemical, not thermal. Low level laser therapy does not cause the heating that results in damage to living tissue.

Low intensity lasers are pure coherent light energy. These "space age" lasers do not cut or burn as high powered surgical lasers do. Instead they penetrate into the skin and in European clinical trials have shown that they accelerate the body's natural healing capabilities, reducing the effects of aging. They work at the cellular level providing light energy to the skin and underlying cells and tissue.

Four distinct effects are known to occur when using low level laser therapy:

A) Growth factor response within cells and tissue as a result of increased ATP and protein synthesis; Improved cell proliferation; Change in cell membrane permeability to calcium up-take.

B) Pain relief as a result of increased endorphin release; Increased serotonin; Suppression of nociceptor action.

C) Strengthening the immune system response via increasing levels of lymphocyte activity and through a newly researched mechanism termed photomodulation of blood.

D) Acupuncture point stimulation.

Low-Level Laser Treatment (LLLT) focuses on the energy pathway in the body using laser technology to produce dramatic results. LLLT accelerates repair in acute injuries but will also simulate the body's repair processes as in cases of non-healing or chronic conditions.

Some Common Fields of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) Application
