Fibromyalgia
Support Net is a web portal site that sets out to make finding
information about Fibromyalgia quick and
easy. HOW DID I
GET FIBROMYALGIA?
There are several theories as to how people
contract Fibromyalgia, but no specific
proof. Research continues and we report on recent findings where
appropriate. Please

- Born with it
- it could be that the disease is present in some people from birth and
they exhibit some mild symptoms in youth. The symptoms increase with age
and may worsen from age 30 onwards, although this varies with each
sufferer. Certainly there is evidence that more YOUNGER people are being
diagnosed in recent years suggesting a possible inherited or birth defect
may be responsible for the disease in around 1% or more of the population.
- An accident
- is considered another cause, possible a car crash, a fall, or even a
trip which wrenches muscles and ligaments which then triggers the onset of
the disease.
- Stress and
trauma - is the third and potentially less likely cause, but
never-the-less possible option to bring about symptoms in a some cases.
There are some key areas that are
considered as linked to the above or as other potential causes of Fibromyalgia,
or have similar symptoms to causing the sufferer to believe they have Fibromyalgia
when in fact their problem is caused by another disease. The reverse is
true, you think you have x, or y when in fact you have Fibromyalgia;
- Immune system problems - Certain
immunologic abnormalities are common among people with fibromyalgia. Some
suggest that fibromyalgia is the result of toxins accumulating in the
muscles from lactic acid build-up.
-
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
is a very common condition,
but is especially prevalent in people with
Fibromyalgia.
IBS is found in approximately 60% of
Fibromyalgia
patients.

- Physically Unfit Muscles There
is increasing evidence that people with fibromyalgia have unfit or poorly
developed muscles. It is not yet known whether unfit muscles are the cause
or the result of fibromyalgia. Nonetheless, this fact is very important;
it suggests that people who are able to engage in a regular exercise
program will see major improvement in their symptoms.
- Disturbance in brain chemistry -
Many people who develop fibromyalgia have a history of clinical
depression.
- Sleep Disturbances or Insomnia.
Many researchers have noticed that fibromyalgia sufferers have a low level
of serotonin. They suggest that the central cause of the pain of
fibromyalgia is due to this low level of serotonin. Chronic low levels of
serotonin cause the sensation of pain to be greatly exaggerated. The low
levels of serotonin also may be the culprit of the insomnia and sleep
disturbances found in fibromyalgia patients.
- Infection with the Epstein-Barr virus
(EBV), the virus that causes infectious mononucleosis, or with the
fungus Candida albicans
- Food allergy (dairy products,
wheat, fermented foods, and nightshades-potatoes, eggplant-are most
common)

- Intestinal candida overgrowth -
Many people suffer from an overgrowth of the micro-organism
Candida Albicans. This condition (called Candidiasis) presents with a wide
variety of symptoms which may vary greatly in each individual case

- Nutritional deficiencies -
are more common than most people believe. Few of us eat
very well, and nutritional deficiencies are very common.

- Adrenal exhaustion -
The effects of adrenal dysfunction can be profound: fatigue
and weakness, suppression of the immune system, muscle and bone loss,
moodiness or depression, hormonal imbalance, skin problems, autoimmune
disorders, and dozens of other symptoms.

- Anaemia -
you get anaemia when you don't have enough red blood cells. This makes it
difficult for your blood to carry oxygen, causing unusual tiredness and
other symptoms.

- Hypoglycemia -
also called low blood sugar, occurs when your blood glucose
(blood sugar) level drops too low to provide enough energy for your body's
activities. In adults or children older than 10 years, hypoglycemia is
uncommon except as a side effect of diabetes treatment, but it can result
from other medications or diseases, hormone or enzyme deficiencies.

- Hypothyroidism -
is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid
hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to "run the body's
metabolism", it is understandable that people with this condition will
have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism.

- Celiac Disease -
People with celiac disease tend to
have other autoimmune diseases. The connection between celiac disease and
these diseases may be genetic.
