The Relation between Migraines and Fibromyalgia

by Groshan Fabiola

Fibromyalgia is a very controversial disorder among the medical community, doctors having divergent opinions about the actual causes and risk factors of the disease. While some groups of medical scientists theorize that fibromyalgia is in fact a purely psychological disorder, its symptoms (generalized fatigue, muscular pain and stiffness, joint rigidity) being self-induced, other groups believe that the disorder has a clear medical background and its symptoms are of neurological cause. Although the debates continue upon this matter, a recent discovery suggests that fibromyalgia is in fact a neurological disorder.

Apart from fatigue, muscular pain and joint stiffness, many patients with fibromyalgia report being confronted with intense, recurrent migraines. While other symptoms of fibromyalgia can be successfully alleviated and controlled both with neurological and psychiatric treatments, the migraines experienced by fibromyalgia patients are very persistent and continue to be perceived even after intensive treatment.

However, despite the fact that both patients who receive neurological treatment and patients who receive psychiatric treatment are still confronted with migraines after completing their course of medications, patients who follow neurological treatments gradually begin to experience migraines at lower intensity. Although it can’t be considered a crucial detail, this fact may suggest that fibromyalgia has in fact a pronounced neurological character and that the symptoms it generates are real, not self-induced as previously speculated by certain groups of psychologists and psychiatrists.

Some medical scientists believe that there is a neurological connection between migraines and fibromyalgia, and are currently aiming to explore this relation in order to find the exact causes of the disorder. Certain groups of neurologists claim that by controlling the migraines which occur in most patients with fibromyalgia, doctors will actually be able to control the causative disease as well.

Medical scientists have also established connections between migraines (as well as other symptoms of fibromyalgia) and the existence of fibromyalgia tender points in all patients with the disorder. Neurologists theorize that the presence of these tender points is another indicator for the neurological nature of fibromyalgia. They believe that by understanding exactly how these tender points are linked with fibromyalgia, they will be able to solve the mystery regarding the true causes of the disorder and also find efficient treatments and therapies in the near future.
