Yoga for Fibromyalgia sufferers - the ups and downs

By Maurice S Clarke

Mention Yoga to a Fibromyalgia sufferer and they usually say one of two things "Tried that and it did not work" or "I cannot do those funny positions with my pain". This negative approach to a two thousand year old tradition means they are missing out on the many benefits Yoga offers to Fibromyalgia sufferers. All it needs is a better understanding of what Yoga is, and how to adapt it to suit your illness.

Yoga consists of 3 elements;

Breathing - learn to breathe and enjoy it, too many people breathe shallow and miss out on both the physical and mental benefits of proper breathing, which is a key part of the Yoga method.

Meditation - sitting quite and thinking, or clearing your mind of everything - sounds great, but modern life is often hectic, noise and distraction is everywhere. You can meditate in a chair, you do NOT have to sit is strange cross legged poses (Lotus or Half Lotus) often used to depict yoga participants.

Exercise - in the form of slow, deliberate movements, held for a few seconds called ASANAS. The correct technique of each pose is vital and right/left need to be performed equally ensure equal development.

Together they help improve stamina, flexibility and general good health, as well as knowledge and tolerance.

Yoga is not a religion, but a way of life, a life science if you will, and regular practice of its methods will mean a happy, fitter and more relaxed life style for both the Fibromyalgia sufferer and those around them.

Fibromyalgia sufferers should approach the task of using Yoga slowly and look for long term benefits rather than short term fixes. Yoga is a discipline too, so you need to "get your head" around the demands.

Yoga classes are out as they often force Fibromyalgia sufferers at too quick a pace, and tutors have limited time to devote to those with special needs.

Instead look for a private tutor in your area who understands the problems your illness gives. Just a few starter lessons are needed to kick you off, then regular daily practice of the techniques. 5-15 minutes in a quiet, airy place is all that is needed.

No special equipment is required, wear loose clothing or even your underwear, or swimwear. Some people find the morning easier, others late at night, experiment with different times. Practice at least 3 days a week and ideally every day. Practice outside in the fresh air if weather and temperature allows. Study books on the subject too, but above all take your time and do not force any of the physical movements.

Yoga is for everyone, young and old alike, it can be adapted to suit the agility, fitness and flexibility of each pupil and the benefits are immense.
